JULY 23.  MISS TESS | 5 - 7PM

When most people think of defiant music, they think of punk rock or outlaw country. But defying genres while transcending eras and resisting clichés is hard to pin down when it comes to artistry—unless you’re talking about Miss Tess, who does all of that and more on her new release, The Moon Is an Ashtray (2020). Swinging for the fences and from the branches of jazz, country, blues and old school rock and roll, she has employed all of her influences and talents on a tour-de- force, while cleverly taking standard perspectives and ideas, like the definition of a love song, to
task.

AUGUST 4. DRAG FIGURE DRAWING WITH ZACRILEGIOUS  | 6 - 8 PM (5:30 PM CHECK IN)

Sip and sketch outdoors in Dumbo this summer with a live figure drawing session led by artist and drag performer, Zacrilegious, open to all levels! Celebrate the art of figure drawing and drag in a special session featuring live drag models showcasing the talent in the local drag community. Drag models will be serving looks while posing at various lengths, ranging from 30 seconds to 20 minutes, with a few lip-sync performances to break up the session.

The white evangelical family Zac Thompson was born into didn’t make room for queer non-binary artists, let alone genderf*ck drag performers. Since they’re both of those things, the myopic traditionalist world their parents made for them growing up felt too small. To make room, they’ve had to build their own queer worlds by using their work to playfully expand the limiting normative structures around home, family, and gender that they grew up with, through a combination of drawing, photography, zine-making, and performance. Born in Colorado Springs, CO, they received their BFA in Drawing from the University of Florida and their MFA from the School of Visual Arts. They are currently co-curator of ArtpartmentNYC and their work has been featured in Hyperallergic as well as exhibited in group shows at the Craig Krull Gallery in Los Angeles, CA, the SVA Chelsea Gallery in New York, NY, Vox Populi in Philadelphia, PA and they have been a resident at the Visual Arts of Chautauqua Institution. They currently live and work in Brooklyn, NY.

We’ll explore classical principle techniques for achieving accurate human proportions, learn contouring methods, employ horizontal lines and vanishing points to give your drawings a sense of form and accuracy, and more! This class is an excellent lesson in learning to draw the human figure!

Tyler Scott was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and holds a BFA in illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. His main focus and background is in comic book illustration, children's books, traditional, and digital mediums. Samuel Bodden studied Fine Arts at the School Of Bellas Artes in the D.R. He has an interest in drawing, painting, wood sculpting, and mixed media; his latest work interacts with the surrounding environment where plywood becomes a sculpting material. By emphasizing aesthetics, he creates form with daily, recognizable elements. When Samuel is not sculpting, he goes back to drawing and understanding forms like the human figure, landscapes, and everyday objects (back to fundamentals).

AUGUST 18. PERSONAL PAINTING + GROUP MURAL WITH CAM | 6 - 8 PM (5:30 PM CHECK IN)

“It was such an honor being the first artist instructor for Drink and Draw Wednesdays in June. This second event is designed to take on the feel of a block party with many elements to show community love & appreciation, and to promote accessibility to art. We will have swag bags, raffles, music, a store with customized merchandise and a lot of fun: creating a new experience for the community while intentionally redefining the concept of your typical drink and draw.

The concept will allow participants to finish a personal painting inspired by the “The Essence of Flight” hummingbird in under an hour. I will introduce a mural wall for group participation that will ultimately be a collaboration between myself and the Dumbo community. This painting will be auctioned off at a later time to benefit the public schools in the neighborhood. I am grateful for the sponsorships of Terrence Laray and Josiane Lysius for supporting the expansion of this event. “ -CAM

Craig Anthony Miller, or CAM, was born and raised in Brooklyn and is a beacon of the Dumbo community, recognized as much for his iconic color-blocked elephant (which has become the fabric of Dumbo’s identity), as for his commitment to pulling our community together with heartfelt passion and love.
