Waya & Monte: Magic Realism in Cienfuegos

Wayacón is Cuba’s most important and beloved outsider artist. Now in his 90’s he continues to walk the streets of Cienfuegos on Cuba’s southern coast, carrying a briefcase, suitcase or bag with the tools of his artistic trade. Dozens of his painted paper lunch bags are in the exhibit, together with art on canvas, paper, tees and shirts. The self-taught artist Montebravo (1953-2010) began drawing and painting in childhood. He became a geography teacher and started working as an artist full-time when the USSR collapsed in the 90s and the economy took a deep dive. His art gently celebrates his own inner demons and lives. These two artists, completely different men, bonded through their art and love of their bit of Cuba.
