I Am A Portrait

Undercurrent is pleased to announce I Am A Portrait, a solo show of Travis Leroy Southworth's work. Drawing heavily on portraiture, temporality, and computerized labor, Southworth’s work trivializes the beauty industry and challenges us to reflect on our own self-presentation in this exhibit.

As an Image Correction Specialist – or, to the layperson, a photo retoucher – Southworth pulls content from his day job, salvaging digital detritus of what advertising companies label flaws. Reshaping this digital material in Photoshop, Southworth presents it in a new physical skin – imperceptible wallpaper, silk sculptures, and a collection of figurative paintings printed on canvas, paper, satin, or suede. Tiny pores, stray hairs, color adjustments, and blemishes become sustainable resources for Southworth’s paintings and sculptures.

About the Artist:

Travis Leroy Southworth has had exhibitions in The Drawing Center (NYC), Martha Otero Gallery (Los Angeles), Mixed Greens Gallery (solo project, NYC), Thomas Robertello Gallery (Chicago), The Bronx Museum of Art (Bronx), Arthouse at the Jones Center (Austin) and the Center for Curatorial Studies at the Hessel Museum of Art (New York).

His work has been reviewed in multiple publications such as Time Out Chicago, Art Slant and L Magazine.
