Heartwalk: Situ Studio
Heartwalk, a massive, 30-foot art installation made from Sandy-salvaged wood, was installed in the Pearl Street Triangle in March and April, 2013.
Heartwalk was designed by Situ Studio, a 20 Jay Street-based design studio, and was originally commissioned to create the piece for Times Square, where it greeted thousands of visitors in February 2013. The piece was then relocated to DUMBO, home neighborhood of the designers and a community that continued to heal following significant devastation from Superstorm Sandy.
Using boardwalk boards salvaged during Sandy’s aftermath—from Long Beach, New York; Sea Girt, New Jersey; and Atlantic City, New Jersey—Heartwalk begins as two ribbons of wooden planks that fluidly lift from the ground to form a heart shaped enclosure.
This was the first year that DUMBO offered a second home for winners of the Times Square Valentine Heart Competition.
Presented in partnership with the NYC Department of Transportation’s Art Program. Special thanks to the Times Square Alliance.
