Want to have your finger on the pulse of one of Brooklyn's most exciting neighborhoods? If you're an urbanist with an entrepreneurial spirit and a creative spark, this is the perfect hands-on learning opportunity!

Who we are

The DUMBO Improvement District is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing and promoting DUMBO, Brooklyn. The Improvement District showcases DUMBO as a world-class destination, advocating on behalf of DUMBO's businesses, property owners and residents. We offer a dynamic, fast-paced work environment that touches on urban planning, economic development, marketing, public space design and programming, digital communications, small businesses development, community organizing and event planning.

Schedule

Minimum 24 hours per week; mix of office hours and event coverage. Office hours are Monday-Friday from 10am-6pm.

NOTE: Thursday availability from2-9pm is required for the summer season. Additional nights and weekend for event coverage will be required in the summer and in the fall.

Internship Dates

  • Winter/Spring Season: January 3 - May 20 (flexible)
  • Summer Season: June 1 - August 20 (flexible)
  • Fall Season: September 1 - December 15 (flexible)

Community Development Position

Community Development interns assist with a wide array of urban planning, public space design and programming, economic development, asset mapping, communications and neighborhood outreach activities. If you're an urbanist with an entrepreneurial spirit and a creative spark, this is the perfect hands-on learning opportunity!

Requirements:

  • Desire to work on community development opportunities;
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, GIS and other platforms;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Experience with website content development and management;
  • General knowledge of DUMBO / Brooklyn neighborhood development (or a desire to learn);
  • Office experience working at a small nonprofit or startup;

Marketing Position

Marketing Interns work with the Director of Marketing and Events on marketing all the cool things happening in DUMBO. This includes profiling companies, businesses and residents in the neighborhood, writing articles about neighborhood trends, working on website development, and tackling social media projects on Instagram and Facebook.

During the summer session, this position is also deeply involved in helping to produce a robust schedule of outdoor programming, including concert series, art installations, sports game viewings and more.

Requirements:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Enthusiasm for and experience with for all things Social Media;
  • Responsible and detail oriented;
  • Experience with website content development and management;
  • General knowledge of DUMBO / Brooklyn neighborhood development (or a desire to learn);
  • Office experience working at a small nonprofit or startup;
  • Some events or stage management experience a plus;
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite a plus.

Technical Production Position

Technical Production interns join the Dumbo BID for the summer and fall seasons, and are a critical in implementing a wide range of public programming in the Dumbo Archway.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist with all technical aspects of our summer programs, including sound, lighting, and more, along with on-site supervisor of events;
  • Troubleshoot logistical event issues and manage accordingly;
  • Assist with communication with artists, facilitators, and other stakeholders;
  • Prepare materials for upcoming events, including informational signage;
  • Document events by taking photos and conducting attendance counts, and assist with real-time social media marketing;
  • Participate in marketing and promotion strategy around programming, including design, social media, and more.

Requirements:

  • Events or stage management experience;
  • Ability to work as a team member and/or work independently and take initiative as appropriate;
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, dynamic environment;
  • Willingness to work irregular hours including nights and weekends on a regular basis;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diplomacy and tact with artists and staff;
  • Must be able to safely lift and carry 30 lbs;
  • Must be comfortable working at height;
  • Experience and enthusiasm for social media and content development a plus.
