Q+A: Yoga Vida
If you thought the DUMBO fitness scene couldn’t get any better, take a look at Yoga Vida, the newest addition to our DUMBO community! Yoga Vida opened its doors earlier this year— it's a great place to relax, and to relieve all that stress! We sat down to talk about their newest spot in DUMBO, and what they’re all about.
Tell us about the concept of Yoga Vida, and how it started.
Yoga Vida was founded in 2009 by Mike Patton and Hilaria Baldwin. It was created out of a need for accessible, inclusive yoga— a space that everyone, at any level, could come to practice without judgement, pressure or demands. Since then we've expanded throughout the city and now offer four studio locations: Union Square, Noho, DUMBO and Tribeca!
[Our teachers] do an incredible job of making students feel comfortable and infuse yoga with fun and joy, while supporting each other both on and off the mat.
Aside from being one of the most accessible and affordable studios (in terms of both classes and teacher training programs), we have some of the best teachers in town. Our instructors are talented, but incredibly approachable and aim to make sure our students feel welcome. They do an incredible job of making students feel comfortable and infuse yoga with fun and joy, while supporting each other both on and off the mat. We're also proud of our commitment to giving back. We joined forces with 1% for the Planet last fall, pledging to donate 1% of gross revenue to environmental and social causes, while working with our partners Protect Our Winters and Wellness in the Schools to create a healthier planet. We're committed to offering quality yoga at affordable prices— tough to find in a city like New York!
How would you describe your studio in DUMBO?
DUMBO is our largest studio yet, complete with two large practice rooms, lockers, showers and steam rooms. We also have a lounge where people are welcome to relax and spend time in before or after class. The space is very calming and peaceful, a nice haven right at the base of the bridge. As with all our studios, we offer a welcoming environment in DUMBO that keeps yoga accessible and fun for everyone at any level. The best part is the view of the bridge from one of our practice rooms. It's such a great way to enjoy yoga— a serene space in the midst of a chaotic city.
What kind of classes do you offer?
Students can find a range of different classes, including flow, basics, prenatal and postnatal, restorative and deep flow.
Why did you decide to open up a place in DUMBO as your first outside of Manhattan?
It was an easy choice given the proximity to the city and the spirit of DUMBO. We really saw that residents and employees here have embraced a healthy lifestyle. There are always people out walking, running and biking, and we thought yoga would be a perfect compliment for those activities.
What do you think of the DUMBO Community?
One of the best things about DUMBO is how welcoming the community has been. It's very different from other parts of the city. There's truly a neighborhood feel, and seeing friendly familiar faces, having regulars in the studio and partnering with local companies just reinforces that feeling.
What is your impression of the DUMBO fitness scene?
DUMBO is booming! There are so many awesome, diverse options for people looking for a workout, from cycling to yoga to rock climbing. Having access to the Brooklyn Bridge and the park also make for great walks when the weather warms up. Followed by a yoga class, we can't think of a better way to spend the day!
What's your favorite place in DUMBO?
We're big fans of Bluestone Lane right when we could use a little fuel!
They're currently offering a "first visit package," which is two weeks of unlimited yoga for $25. You can sign up online or visit the studio.
