Q+A: Robert Isakov, Barber On Pearl
Do you normally head to the barbershop every few weeks for a trim or a straight razor line-up? If you like it high and tight, dig a clipper cut, a classic men's style, or a very short haircut, Barber on Pearl is for you! Their talented barbers have a range of experience, from Apprentice to Master Barber, and their prices reflect their years of experience. We sat down with Robert Isakov to learn more about his decade in DUMBO.
Do you remember your first haircut?
Yes of course! My grandfather was a barber and he used to cut my hair. I’m sure that I had a zero on top. Everything cut clean.
What does it take to be a great barber?
You’ve got to listen to the customers, you have to be in the same boat as your customer to give a good haircut!
You've been in DUMBO almost a decade! How's it been?
We opened on July 2nd, 2010. There has been a lot of changes in DUMBO since then–new stores, new restaurants, new apartments. It's been interesting. To be an owner of a barber shop, you’re learning everyday. I’m not saying that I am the best, but I try to be the best.
Now that you have a decade under your belt, what advice would you give a young business owner in the neighborhood?
To be patient. DUMBO is growing bigger everyday.
I’m always willing to learn and accommodate the customers.
When did you open the kids salon and what influenced that decision?
It opened 2 years ago, and we opened because there are many children in DUMBO!
Lastly what are some of your favorite spots in DUMBO?
Ohhhh, I have a lot of favorite places here. I love Brooklyn Roasted Coffee and Gleason’s Gym.
