POV Wins A MacArthur Award! (And Seeks Hackers)

A HUGE congratulations to DUMBO's own POV, one of 13 nonprofits in the world selected for the 2013 MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions (the organizational version of the fabled "genius grants"). The $1 million dollar award recognizes American Documentary, producers of the award-winning series POV, which is celebrating its 25th year on PBS. American television's longest-running showcase for independent documentaries, POV has presented more than 365 films since its first season in 1988 and have won every major film and broadcasting award, including 32 Emmy Awards and three Academy Awards. POV films are lauded for going "beyond the broadcast" and tackling some of the most pressing challenges facing society, including food safety (Food, Inc.), health care (Critical Condition), veterans' affairs (Where Soldiers Come From), immigration (Sin País) and education (American Promise).

In other POV news, the organization invites filmmakers and developers interested in cross-platform, web-based storytelling to apply for the POV Hackathon 3, happening April 13-14. The goal? Reinvent documentary for the web. Application deadline is March 12. But before you submit, be sure to check out the prototypes that came out of 2012′s POV Hackathon 1 and January 2013′s POV Hackathon 2 and these hand submission tips to give you an edge over the competition.
