Here’s Your Brooklyn Tech Triangle Update

Here's an update on the Brooklyn Tech Triangle Initiative - which the DUMBO Improvement District is working on to support the growth of digital and creative companies right here in DUMBO:

  • WXY Architecture + Urban Design was hired in the fall to study and devise a plan to increase the opportunities and attractiveness of growth of these sectors in and around DUMBO, the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Downtown Brooklyn. The planning team also includes HR&A AdvisorsSam Schwartz Engineering, Control GroupCenter for an Urban Future, Domingo Gonzalez Associates (placemaking and lighting specialists), Workshop: Ken Smith Landscape Architect and Pentagram (placemaking signage and visual connections). See great instagram of Paula Scher meeting with swissmiss!
  • The team has met with and interviewed dozens of firms from DUMBO, Manhattan and elsewhere and other local stakeholders to pinpoint needs, opportunities and challenges.
  • A planning meeting was held with the public, facilitated with Community Board 2 in December.
  • Options on the table include use of the Watchtower Buildings at Sands Street for startup space, incentives for landlords to make their spaces more startup friendly, improved bike and bus connections throughout, building on the East River Ferry successes, greater connections with local universities to ensure proper workforce is available, retail strategies to activate street level spaces between the neighborhoods and more.

"We expect the plan to be a blueprint for keeping the DUMBO movement moving," said Alexandria Sica, Executive Director at the DUMBO Improvement District. "Residential growth will continue and the kind of amenities that make this neighborhood great for the creatives who occupy our streets by day are wonderful for the enjoyment of our residents. We hope the plan will be a major win for all DUMBOnians."

That blueprint is expected to be workshopped over the next few months and finalized later this spring. To get involved, please email
