!Feliz Aniversario, Gran Electrica!

It's been a year since Gran Electrica opened its doors at 5 Front Street, and this market-driven Mexican restaurant celebrates the occasion on Tuesday, March 26 with an all-night happy hour. We caught up with owner Elise Rosenberg to reflect on Gran Electrica's first year in DUMBO.

What do you love about your DUMBO address?

DUMBO is a rare and special neighborhood in that it is very much a village.  There is a small-town vibe here that I've never really experienced before in New York.  Everyone knows each other, people really care about their neighbors. It's the opposite of the concentrated isolation of Manhattan.  The immense community spirit post-Hurricane Sandy is of course the most obvious example, but I feel it on a daily and nightly basis. It's incredible to be a part of that.

What have you learned?

DUMBO is extremely weather-sensitive.  If it's drizzling outside at 5pm we pretty much know we can send two servers home. We've also realized how unique and cool the businesses are in DUMBO.  Such creative, interesting, passionate people have their offices here, it's been great to build relationships with these companies.  Launching our weekday happy hour really helped drive the local workforce here, and it creates an amazing bar vibe to kick off the night.

What can we expect more of over the next year?

Our first year was about getting to know the neighborhood, working out the kinks, figuring out how to manage a seasonal restaurant that doubles in size if it's warm and sunny.  Our second year is about getting everything ship-tight, perfecting our systems, tweaking recipes to maximize deliciousness.  We are also determined to make that garden as awesome as possible. Expect live music on Saturday afternoons, and some killer Sunday parties. And tequila. Lots and lots of tequila.
