Downward Dog in DUMBO Check out this profile of neighborhood yoga fave BK Yoga and its co-founders, Alicia Ferguson and Paris Alexandra, who opened their DUMBO studio to be an inclusive, body-positive communal space. Investing in Improvement Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced six Downtown Brooklyn-based projects to be funded by the Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant in order to continue the “remarkable success” of the area’s growth. The initiatives include the addition of a pedestrian crossing connecting Commodore Barry Park and the Brooklyn Navy Yard with Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO and the BAM Cultural District, areas currently disconnected by the BQE.
Welcome Em Vietnamese Bistro! The New York Times deemed Em Vietnamese’s mango shake “the kind of drink that turns your insides to gold,” and their food “hard to resist.” Now, Eater announces that the Bensonhurst Bistro is expanding to 57 Front Street in DUMBO. With fusion dishes like their Banh Mi BEC (Bacon Egg and Cheese), we think this is a match made in culinary heaven.
A Pebble Beach tradition DUMBO shores lit up with homemade, brightly colored candles earlier this month as hundreds gathered on Pebble Beach to celebrate the Aarti Hindu Lamp Ceremony. Brooklyn resident Aeilushi Mistry has held the Hindu ritual, meant to honor rivers as a source of life and peace, in DUMBO since 2013. “I just think it’s a very beautiful ceremony ... to watch [the lamps] flow down the river. It’s very peaceful. There’s something about it that’s very soothing,” said one participant.
Come on down to Photoville! DUMBO-based United Photo Industry’s eighth annual interactive photography exhibit won’t open until mid-September, but the buzz is already here! Photoville 2019 will transform Brooklyn Bridge Park into an immersive photography village populated by 90+ shipping containers repurposed into galleries, accompanied by a variety of educational events and entertainment. Mark your calendars now for an art event Afar deems a “can’t miss.”
Gigi and Tyler in DUMBO ... Oh my! The Manhattan Bridge wasn't the only one making scenes in DUMBO this month. Fans of the longtime reality show The Bachelorette were breathless over cast member Tyler Cameron's recent visit to DUMBO House with supermodel Gigi Hadid. Page Six quotes a source on their very-DUMBO date: "She came out of the main entrance by Almondine bakery. He walked around to alley on the left by Smile to Go. Her car picked him up there." Celebrities, they're just like us!
