…a mind-blowing show–definitely not to be missed.
Underground System, the Brooklyn, New York born female-fronted group of modern afrobeat deconstructionists, augments its presence with a multitude of eclectic musical influences including the South Bronx girl group ESG, Fela Kuti, and British new wave cult classic band XTC, together with a penchant for the deeper sounding corners of New York City dance floors. The group gained prominence with the release of a dozen official remixes of Bella Ciao – a retro-futuristic interpretation of a Partisan anti-fascist Italian WWII anthem.
Kylin O’Brien is a New York City born Brooklyn based multidisciplinary artist. She holds a BA in Philosophy from Vassar College and a BA (Honours) in Contemporary Creative Practice from Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK, where she was awarded a part-time lectureship while pursuing advanced multimedia studies. Kylin has participated in numerous group exhibitions and has enjoyed solo exhibitions in New York at FEATURE INC gallery, Chashama and Open Source gallery. She has been a Brooklyn Arts Council, Awesome Foundation and Pro Arts award winner. She has created commissioned public work during Art Basel Miami and has had public works on display in Wynwood Miami, West Oakland & Brooklyn. In addition to her studio practice, she is currently directing multiple initiatives, collaborations, workshops and presentations.
“Recent work invokes organically occurring forms, simple symbols and elemental ideas to stimulate wonder and mindfulness,” she says. “I utilize both contemporary cultural metaphors and the raw symbolism resonant within ancient imagery, creatures, myths and philosophies to access enduring themes. My current work is complex, not complicated, and the key to its ideation resides within a willingness to entertain such a subtle, but quintessential, distinction.”

The Space Station, by This Friday or Next Friday, premieres at this year’s Live at the Archway. Tfnf is likely the tiniest, most inconsequential art gallery in DUMBO, Brooklyn, probably in NYC, and maybe on the face of the earth. It was founded by Nathan Sinai Rayman, and he runs it with Zach Seeger, his Director of Programs.
Live at the Archway–a curated series from the DUMBO Improvement District & The Lighthouse–showcases the best of DUMBO and Brooklyn talent, presenting a broad range of music and performance genres. This season brings sizzling salsa, Colombian cumbia, swing dancing, world roots music, sultry R&B, an Italian modern dance troupe, puppetry, funk, DJs and more. With beer, wine and bites from The Lighthouse and epic scenery below the Manhattan Bridge, it’s the best place to be every Thursday night. Concerts & events take place on Thursday evenings at 6:00 p.m.
