Punk, funk and jazz via Afro-Colombia and Queens: That’s the driving and gritty energy behind New York’s M.A.K.U. Sound System. Led by vocalist Liliana Conde and outfitted with horns and guitars, this raw-edged, punk-tinged band explodes with the propulsive force of traditional rhythms and urban restlessness.
M.A.K.U Soundsystem embodies an active quest for identity through sound and bodies in motion, and puts on a party for all who attend their concerts. M.A.K.U’s distinctive sound juxtaposes traditional Colombian percussion, drum-set, synthesizers, electric base, guitar and sizzling horns, creating an explosive performance filled with unshakable grooves together with lyrics that speak about everyday realities that encompass love, hardships, culture, and the immigrant experience, with a positive, spiritual and sometimes humorous spin.
French Artist Niko de La Faye comes for a ride in New York after his 3,400 km performance from Beijing to Hong Kong (2012-2013), and his shows in Paris (2014-2015). His kinetic sculpture ‘M2B’ consists of a traditional Chinese tricycle carrying on its back a representation of the Universe that refers to both Eastern and Western cultures. His performance/trip across China was a way to reinvent in a contemporary way an ancestral tradition of itinerant shadow shows that almost disappeared nowadays and to create a contrast, of slowness and poetry, into the fast moving Chinese environment. He will present you this beautiful and enigmatic ballet of geometrical shapes and light. www.m2bproject.com
Eugene Tambourine draws on both a musician and DJ’s background to express a deep love of polyrhythm and melody. His North Satellite EP is now available on iTunes, layering waves of live percussion and moody keys to rearrange material by synth pioneers Kevin Saunderson and Laurie Anderson.
