Plan Ahead: Halloween in and around DUMBO

Halloween is a major holiday in DUMBO, especially among the younger set. Festivities tend to be a bit tamer than those across the river in the Village, but fun and frightening all the same. Here, our picks for events leading up to and on the big day:

  • Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Harvest Festival: Halloween celebrations start at Brooklyn Bridge Park on Saturday, October 22nd.  The Festival takes place on Pier 6 at Atlantic Avenue and features a Halloween parade, musical guests, face painting, storytelling, art activities, mask making and pumpkin decorating. The parade begins at noon from the music area. Nancy Webster, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy says, “We’re happy to offer local families the opportunity to enjoy some music, decorate a pumpkin, and spend time on the beautiful Pier 6. After a fantastic summer of programming the park, we are thrilled to end the season with this family-friendly festival.” Brooklyn Bridge Park- Pier 6, Saturday, October 22 from 10:30AM – 1PM.
  • The Annual Brooklyn Heights Halloween Parade: Pierrepont Playground, foot of Pierrepont Street and Columbia Heights. Saturday, October 29, 2011 (rain date Sunday, October 30) at 10:00AM. In addition to the parade, there will be a bake sale to raise funds for the maintenance of the playground.
  •  The powerHouse Arena Kids’ Halloween Party: Sunday, October 30, 4:00PM- 5:00PM. Show off your costume and hear featured readings from Cambria Evans (Bone Soup) and Mike Rex (Runaway Mummy).  Recommended for kids aged 3-8.
  • Gleason’s Gym Halloween Party – a fundraiser for the Give A Kid A Dream Foundation: Cost – $25 for Adults, $10 for Kids or $30 for a Family. $500 Prize for Best Costume. Sunday, October 30, 4:00PM – 7:00PM. Call Gleason’s for more info (718) 797-2872.
  • Jam on DUMBO’s Musical Halloween Parade: Meet at corner of Main and Plymouth Streets, Monday, October 31 at 4:00PM. Before trick or treating, make music with Jam on DUMBO and stroll around the ‘hood.
  • Trick or Treating in DUMBO: Various participating retailers (specific locations to be announced) will open their doors to costume-sporting children. Shop while your little one stocks up on candy. Monday, October 31,4:00PM – 7:00PM.
  • For grown-ups: the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s Junior Committee is hosting their Second Annual All Hallows Eve Bash on Saturday, October 29th.  The theme is Heroes and Villains; prizes will be awarded to the best dressed guests.  Tickets are $50 in advance or $60 at the door (all guests must be 21 or over), and all proceeds will benefit the Conservancy’s free public programming in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
  • For your furry friends: The Ninth Annual Brooklyn Heights Howl-o-Ween Charity Doggie Costume Parade and Contest will be held on Sunday, October 30th from 1:00PM – 3:00PM on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Pre-register for the event at Perfect Paws on the corner of Hicks and Cranberry Streets; cost per dog is $25.
  • NEWPre-Halloween Music, Beer & Wine Tasting: Join the independent owners of The Shops at 145 Front Street on Friday, October 28th from 6:00 – 9:00PM for music from Leysha-P and Widy, two emerging R&B artists, while enjoying beer and wine.  Participating shops will offer 10%.   • NEW – Pomme Halloween Party: Stop by Pomme at 81 Washington Street on Saturday, October 29th from 1:00PM-3:00PM for art projects, face painting and treats for all!
