Navy Yard Museum Opens to the Public
This weekend, DUMBO’s neighbor to the east, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, celebrates the opening of the BLDG 92, their exhibition and visitors center. BLDG 92, a new exhibition and visitors center, tells for the first time the story of the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, the 300-acre site nestled on the world-famous Brooklyn waterfront that opened in 1801 as one of America’s first naval shipyards.
BLDG 92 opens to the public on Friday, 11.11.11 – but we got a sneak peak today at the opening ceremony. Our picks for your visit:
- “Brooklyn Navy Yard: Past, Present and Future” is an expansive exhibit over 3 floors. One part that stood out to us were the amazing video testimonials from people who actually served there back in the heyday of the Yard.
- Check out “Designing the Future” to see work from some of the most innovative minds in Brooklyn (The Navy Yard is one of the 3 Points on the Tech Triangle along with DUMBO and Downtown Brooklyn- an idea that the DUMBO Improvement District and others are promoting).
- Gallery 92: Currently showing “War Photojournalists,” dedicated to the memory of Tim Hetherington, who shared space with the exhibit’s curator in the Navy Yard.
We spoke to Aisha Glover, VP of External Affairs at the Yard, and she shared her excitement about the opening and extended an open invitation to us by saying, “one of the most important audiences we want to reach through the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92 is the surrounding communities. We are thrilled to invite our neighbors in from nearby DUMBO.”
BLDG 92 captures this extraordinary history in one of the most innovative exhibitions: cutting-edge interactive media offers access to oral histories of, among others, some of the nation’s first Rosie the Riveters, and never-before-seen artifacts, photographs, audio and video footage and ship models. The 8,000 square foot exhibit, open free to the public, explores our national history through the lens of where many important moments happened—at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Join in the opening weekend activities at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, including a scavenger hunt and free bus tours.
