Stay Cool at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pop-Up Pool
With temperatures rising to a sizzling 90+ degrees all week, here’s some refreshing news: the Brooklyn Bridge Park Pop-Up Pool on Pier 2 kicks off its second season on June 27. Free and open seven days a week from 10 am to 6 pm, seven days a week, the pool will be sure to restore your sanity when you’re at the end of your heat-wave rope (at least until Labor Day).
At 3.5′ deep, this is not the place to refine one’s cannonball technique. That said, the pool measures it is 30′ by 50′, though so there’s plenty of room for swimming or just cooling off with friends. The day is divided into 45-minute swim sessions that begin every hour, on the hour, with a maximum capacity of 60 people per session. Starting in July, swimming lessons (moderately priced) will be available from 8am to 10am. Children under four feet two inches must be accompanied by an adult.
If you need a break from swimming, there is a sandy beach with lounge chairs, picnic tables and umbrellas surrounding the pool where you can chill with friends and take in incredible views of the lower-Manhattan-skyline until 11 pm. Lizzmonade Brooklyn, the pool-side concessionaire, will be offering fresh lemonade, snacks and, after 6 pm, enjoy a beach-side happy hour with fresh sangrias and local craft beers on tap. Rounding out the entertainment will be activities such as trivia and bocce ball will be hosted on-site.
So mid-week, when you’re feeling wilted and you’ve lost your will to move – use your last ounce of energy to get to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Pop-Up Pool. Take a dip in the pool, sit river side in a beach chair with a sangria in hand and take in the view and the breeze. This is what summer’s all about.
