Food Truck in Town: Snowday

The Snowday food truck is back in DUMBO! After a winter hiatus to build out their new commissary kitchen and classroom in the old Pfizer building, Snowday is returning to the Dumbo lot on Water & Jay with new offerings this season.

Just named one of Eater’s top 11 food trucks in the city, Snowday’s latest menu is going to change how you think about your lunch. Deep fried smoked spare ribs with maple chimichurri, beer braised beef neck sliders, and a rotating charred vegetable dish with maple curry remoulade and pea shoots are all sure to satisfy your stomach as well as your desire to help others. Nearly entirely locally sourced, Snowday’s pledge to sustainable food practices is as strong as its commitment to empowering formerly incarcerated youth; social justice has never tasted so good!

Check out this 2014 Vendy Rookie of the Year winner every other Wednesday!

Snowday is the first food truck of social enterprise  Drive Change, which helps formerly incarcerated youth by giving them hands-on work experience in New York City at Snowday. “Food trucks are an emerging food trend with low overhead costs and oozing creative identity. We embrace the model to employ young people leaving the adult criminal justice system – giving them hands-on work experience while simultaneously teaching transferable skills that they can take with them when they move onto to the future opportunities that Drive Change helps create. We create green lights for young people who are often faced with dead ends and stop signs.”

Drive Change teamed up with DUMBO’s Situ Studio to come up with a state-of-the-art food truck that had an alluring rustic design that would match the food that it will offer. Designed and fabricated by Situ, Snowday’s exterior was built from reclaimed Redwood lumber once used in a cooling tower of a coal-burning power plant and Cedar that comprised a greenhouse structure. Watch a cool time lapse video of the final design installation hours here.
