Labapalooza: Not Your Ordinary Puppet Show!

It’s that time of year again for St. Ann’s Warehouse to present Labapalooza! A Festival of New Puppet Theater from The Lab, showcasing the work developed over the year in their Puppet Lab. Now in its sixteenth year, the Puppet Lab is St. Ann’s Warehouse’s experimental haven for artists developing interdisciplinary puppet and object theater projects.

Under the direction of directors Matt Acheson and Krissy Smith, participating artists and their collaborators meet weekly over a period of nine months to develop projects, share puppetry elements and other design and technical ideas, discuss plot structure and character development, and work on narrative. Moderated critical discussion follows each presentation.

Labapalooza! presents a wide range of new avant-garde puppet works presented in two programs:

Program A features Gulliver’s Travels (Excerpts) by Puppet Cinema / Justin Perkins; Rock Paper Scissors by Julian Crouch and Saskia Lane; Hildegard (Vision) by Pioneers Go East Collective; and Pink Bunny by Maiko Kikuchi. Program A will run on Thursday 5/29 at 8PM, Saturday 5/31 at 8PM, and Sunday 6/1 at 3PM.

Program B showcases The Fox vs. The Kingdom by Studio Reynard (Anastacia Bolina, Laura Brenneman and Hélène Lesterlin); American Weather (Excerpt), by Chris Green; Space Available by Pepper Fajans; and The Wider Earth by Dead Puppet Society. Program B runs Friday 5/30 at 8PM, Saturday 5/31 at 3pm, and Sunday 6/1 at 7pm.

Frances Faye’s Folk Song Sing-A-Long with Ken Nintzel will be the curtain act presented for both programs.
