Come Out & Play Fest Hits DUMBO 7/18

On Friday July 18th, the annual Come Out & Play Festival returns to New York City by kicking off the festivities in DUMBO!  This two day festival brings together gaming, design, and the urban environment through both video and street games.  The games will be centered around the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge, where players can sign up.  All games are first-come, first-serve and free for the public.

Check out Friday night’s games held in DUMBO below:

  • Under the Hood: A hand-puppet party game.  Players will need to work together to create a “hand-scape” on which Little Red will frolic over the river and through the woods, to grandmother’s house.
  • Henka Twist Caper: Henka Twist Caper is a physical game that uses the PlayStation Move controller. Players must twist and turn their controller to find the right orientation. Once that position is found, they must hold it there until their team’s meter is full, while staying in the restricted area.
  • Hot Mess: Digitally enabled Twister.  Players must use their bodies to connect all of the contact points without letting go, or else it’s game over. Each short round lasts about a minute, and is played with two to four players.
  • 5 Boro Basketball: 15 milk crates will be spread around the festival HQ in the Archway.  Players toss or place 4-inch foam balls into the milk crates to score points for their favorite borough.  The balls in the crates are counted up at the end of the night.  Players play at their leisure.
  • Fun-O-Meter: A machine that monitors body vitals to drive the game.  Do you have more fun than your friends, radiate more positive energy, and keep calmer and carry on? Then this is the game for you! All you need to win at this insanely entertaining feat of physical and emotional strength is a great smile and a positive attitude.
  • EXO: Arena: It’s like laser tag with your phone.  The game uses the GPS in iPhones to track players as they move around real space while “tagging” the other players.
  • Henka Twist Caper: Henka Twist Caper is a physical game that uses the PlayStation Move controller. Players must twist and turn their controller to find the right orientation. Once that position is found, they must hold it there until their team’s meter is full, while staying in the restricted area.
  • Who’s that Loft?: A scavenger hunt around DUMBO.  The narrative tells the story of “neighborhood change” in DUMBO.
  • Light Fight: Two teams of two face off using the power of light! The play area is a square with cardboard boxes scattered throughout it.  Players take turns sneaking around the boxes.  The other team shines a flashlight on them and they must freeze.
  • Peaches: Peaches is a two-player video game that will be projected on the wall. The game uses a Xbox Kinect controller.  Set in a fairytale context, both players must control one magical dragonfly. They must wave their hands frantically and work together to achieve their goals. But as the game progresses, their goals diverge. The players must figure out between themselves how they will end the game.
  • Scattershot: Video game projected on the wall. Grab your smart phone and a couple of friends, and jump into the biggest arena shooter ever.  Collaboratively control spaceships.  Up to 40 players at once.

The festival continues over at Governor’s Island on Saturday July 19th.  Let the games begin!
