The Brooklyn Historical Society opens in Empire Stores

The Brooklyn Historical Society, the 154 year-old institution whose main site is located on Pierrepont Street, is opening a satellite location in the heart of DUMBO–and we are thrilled! BHS DUMBO is an exciting new museum and gift shop that highlights the history and culture of the Brooklyn waterfront, located at 55 Water St in Empire Stores.

With views overlooking Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Manhattan Bridge and the East River, BHS DUMBO will focus its inaugural exhibition on Brooklyn’s waterfront, celebrated through a collection of photographs from the early 20th century to today. “Shifting Perspectives: Photographs of Brooklyn’s Waterfront” features the work of dozens of photographers including Berenice Abbot, Bruce Davidson, and Chester Higgins, and travels from the shores of the East River, to the Gowanus Canal, to Coney Island’s Atlantic Ocean.

Opening day is Friday, May 19. Visit them during their inaugural weekend on May 20 & 21, as they throw open our doors to the public for FREE! Plus, on Saturdays families can pick up self-guided exhibition kits to explore the museum.

Brooklyn Historical Society hours are:
Mon through Fri, 12 pm – 6 pm
Sat and Sun, 10 am – 7 pm
