Á la Cart: “You Are What You Eat”

“If we are what we eat, who are we if we don’t know the origin and the context of the production of our food?”  This is the question that led artists Kristyna and Marek Milde to create Á la Cart, a living sculpture that forces participants to think about the limits of consumerism.

Á la Cart is a participatory, edible workshop that has been growing in Old Fulton Plaza since May 2014.  Milde and Milde invited members of the community to contribute their favorite recipes to the project and grow all the necessary ingredients in one of six shopping carts filled with soil.

As part of DUMBO Arts Festival, there will be an informal harvest on Saturday September 27th from 3-5pm.  Come sample some extremely local goodies, meet the participants, and share ideas about urban farming and sustainable food production!

Á la Cart was originally created for Smack Mellon’s FOODShed: Art and Architecture in Action project, and was curated by Amy Lipton.
