Sandy Schmandy! Look Who’s Open Again

You’ve read about the devestation Sandy brought upon our businesses and art spaces. We’ll – there’s nothing like a little cash flow to get your business back on track and we’re thrilled to let you know that all of the following businesses have found a way to open back up. Note: These businesses are open, but still recovering and paying off hundreds of thousands in emergency repairs, so please help them out by giving them your business and continuing to support relief efforts through promotions like Small Business Saturday – where a number of more fortunate DUMBO spots will donate a portion of sales to the Rebuild DUMBO Fund.

Back open three weeks after Sandy in DUMBO (we’ll keep this list updated, so stay tuned):

  • One Girl Cookies: Sandy might have taken away some cupcakes, but it didn’t take away Dawn, Dave and the rest of the OGC crew’s resolve to get back to selling whoopie pies! Stop in for a sweet treat, coffee or that pie you need to bring to the in-laws’ for Thanksgiving. You can contribute to their fundraising campaign here.
  • Aegir Boardworks: Just in time for snowboard season, Aegir has all you need for the slopes: boards, bindings, gloves, jackets and more. They will even be putting together some trips to local mountains throughout the winter! Stay tuned to their website/ twitter for details. Contribute to their GoFundMe fundraising here.
  • 66 Water Street Restaurant: The Underwater Lounge may have been literally under water a few weeks ago, but today they are open with a NEW full menu and chef. Check out the new menu highlights (stop by to check out the full menu). Lunch: Maine Lobster Mac n’ Cheese app, James Virgil’s Texas-style Chili, Winter Squash & Zucchini Fetuchini, BK Style Cheeseteak on Garlic Baguette, VT White Cheddar Grilled cheese with tomato soup, & Water Street Burger (Pat LaFrieda Special Blend). Dinner: Cherry Stone Clam Chowder, Procuitto-wrapped Meatloaf, Rosemary Marinated Lamb Chops with 7 Hour Shepherd’s Stew and Parsley-Mustard-Lamb Cruton, VT Maple Syrup Glazed Pork Loin, SF North-Shore Style Market Cioppino. Daily Fish Specials and well-portioned salads are available as well. You can also book your office/ wedding/ bday parties there in the 7,000 square foot duplex. Brunch menu coming soon…
  • White Wave Dance Studio: White Wave was devastated to cancel 8 dance performances in its Wave Rising Series. The company is currently looking to offer new dance classes. You can help them determine the first run of classes by completing a short survey here. They are also hard at work in prep for the 10th Anniversary CoolNY 2013 Dance Festival January 30 – February 10th, presented free of charge at the White Wave John Ryan Theater!
  • Rabbit Hole Studios: The studios took on some of the flood waters thanks to Sandy, but thanks to the collaborative efforts amongst the studio folks, all studios are back up and running! Contemplate your turkey day with a screening of “The Discreet Charm of Bourgeoisie” on November 29th, or pop into one of the other studios:
    • Creatively Wild: Not letting a few wet floorboards get in their way, the studio is back and hosting all sorts of art classes for all ages and skill levels.
    • Rabbit Movers: The Rabbit crew are ready to help with your moving needs. Whether you’re moving the new art piece for above the mantle (they have skilled art movers on-hand for such jobs) or are moving to higher ground, get in touch (tip: book now for end/ beginning of month moves!)
    • NYC Massage & Healing: Let go of the stress of Sandy and/or the upcoming holidays with a deep tissue or Swedish massage–gift certificates are available too!
    • Brooklyn Creative League: Want to expand your photography skills beyond your Instagrammed Sandy photos? Lots of great photography classes available. Check out their schedule here.
  • Galapagos Art Space: Having a lake and concrete floors turns out to be a great way to ensure your business bounces back quickly from a flood. While they didn’t escape any damage, Galapagos was back up and running only a week after Sandy blew through and even hosted the Help DUMBO Rebuild Fundraiser last week.
  • powerHouse Arena: It sure seemed like Sandyhatesbooks, but after a great turnout at their fundraiser and because of the staff working tirelessly to get things back in working order, PowerHouse is back up and running (and even opening a new shop in Park Slope soon). They are still working on getting their entire stock back in order, so check out their website to see what you can do to help.
  • 7 Old Fulton: After a short stint with water filing up their basement, chef/ owner Danny Balidemic was dry and serving his mix of American and Mediterranean fare just days after Sandy paid her visit, offering the same beautiful views of the (temporarily dark) Manhattan skyline.
  • Brooklyn Roasting Company: You would have thought that BK Roasting made it out of Sandy with no damage. While they saved most of the important stuff (read: coffee bean supply), they still sustained some heavy damage to their basement. BK Roasting was back up and serving coffee the day after the storm and are back to almost full capacity.
  • Governor: Though they might not back back open yet, they’re working hard to make that happen. Help them out through their GoFundMe site.
  • Almondine: Chef Herve Poussot saw significant amount of devastation to DUMBO’s pastry favorite Almondine and is still working to assess the total damage. Stay tuned to Almondine’s website, Facebook page and twitter for updates and you can now donate to the “Help Rebuild Almondine” fundraiser.
  • SmackMellon: The basement studio spaces filled up with 6 feet of water, so SmackMellon is working hard to bring those spaces back (the gallery remains intact!). They have had to postpone the upcoming ”The Hollow Center,” Curated by Nina Horisaki-Christens to March 9, 2013. Stay tuned here for updates on their progress and click the link at the bottom of the page to donate to their relief efforts.
  • Punto Bianco: Those who know owner George Lati, know that he wouldn’t let a storm keep him down for long. He and his family-operated business are back (starting 11/27) and serving up hot coffee, pastries and an assortment of Mediterranean sandwiches and salads to DUMBO devotees.
